David LaChapelle: the end of an era?

No one more than David LaChapelle has been envolved in our world of luxury and debauchery. No one else could see the limits of our system and the need to regenerate it, the need to set up new rules even if some people feel like a trahison.

Recently David LaChapelle (born in Connecticut in 1969) added to Valérie Duponchelle "I'm looking for the innocence in things, the joy, the sexuality, the life force. It's true I photograph celebrities a lot. One day I felt that I had come to the end of my exploration of popular culture".

" For me, 'The Deluge' is about the craziness of being faced with danger, with imminent death, when every material thing is taken away. You have to find some sort of enlightenment when everything you value suddenly becomes worthless" .

David LaChapelle was described sometimes as "The Fellini of photography". It is true, David LaChapelle's work is characterized by an oneiric, dreamlike dimension with unreal images in which imagination blends with poetic paradox.

But finally what will end or what will happen after a long story in the field of fashion and celebrity including Britney Spears, Madonna, Naomi Campbell and Paris Hilton for magazines like Vogue Italia, Vanity Fair and The Face?

What will happen after the "deluge" and Biblical narrative of the flood , the crash between car industry and CocaCola or the oversized hamburger killer? Will David LaChapelle move from commercial photography to making art? Is David LaChapelle going to take a break on his 20-acre bio farm in Maui?

"I think we're in a post-pornographic time, and nothing seems shocking, but everything remains carnal no matter what you do. We can only look at the people and their flesh and how beautiful they are next to each other. After all, perfect bodies of today are striving toward lines defined by the classicism of Michelangelo, which was derived from the classicism of Greece".
as he said when recently sitting in the hall of the Hôtel de la Monnaie in Paris for his most recent work exhibition ( see video clip here below).

Very excited to see from this fabulous photograph the resuls of this new orientation, expecting these new perspectives will be fruitful.
